I know I am preaching to the choir here. Most of those reading this are
the frugal type. Rehabbing, making trash into treasure, living a life
that is about DIY, not excessive, compulsive spending.
But would you do me a favor? Just remember those who dumpster dive, not for a wonderful old piece of furniture to redo, but for food to feed themselves or their families.
Those who prowl the thrift stores, not for an antique teapot, but hoping to find a cheat jacket, anything cheap enough, to keep them from the fierce wind. Those who sleep, not in a beautiful bedroom, but in a box in an alley.
And, perhaps most heartbreaking of all, the military men and women who have returned with horrible wounds, some seen, some seen only by God. Some of those servicemen and women are homeless, struggling with a pain we cannot even begin to comprehend.
In the midst of your shopping, decorating, baking, wrapping, etc., can you take just a little money to donate food to a food pantry, or clothing or blankets to a charity that will see they go to those who need them? Could you maybe visit a nursing home, or start a tradition with your children of spending just a few hours in a community food kitchen? Maybe just stop in a VA hospital with a stack of thank you cards, and hand them out to the patients, just spend a few moments to say hello. It would lift their spirits---and I bet it would raise your own spirits, too!! If you don't have the money, or the time, perhaps you could just pray for all those folks, in whatever form your own prayers take.
I don't mean to dampen your holiday cheer, to bring you down. Definitely not, I want each and every one of you to have a wonderful Christmas, filled with all the things that bring you joy. I hope everything you hope to receive will be under your tree this year. I'm just asking you to give what you can, of your time, or your money, or your unneeded clothes or blankets. Just help spread the joy around, you know? Because if everyone who can will give just a little, think of the joy that will spread like wildfire, to those who have so little to be joyful about!!
Wishing you love, laughter, joy and blessings untold!
Sandra

My thoughts exactly. Thank you for this post. Perhaps you have not seen this. http://socksforsandy.blogspot.com/ This is what Americans are doing for other Americans. I so love it. I'd rather give something than money to a charity that uses some of it for their administration fees. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joani, and thank you for the link, that is a great idea for giving. I don't have a lot to give, but what I do give, I want to go to the people who need it. Hugs and blessings
ReplyDeletehere in TN the stores started to put out Christmas stuff at the end of August...
ReplyDeleteGood grief, Dani, isn't everybody tired of it waaaay before Christmas?? Thank you so much for coming by and leaving a comment!!
ReplyDeleteHey Sandra, thanks for this beautiful and eye-opening post. I totally agree. To the point that I started to not like Christmas :( And then, I was like, NO. I am taking Christmas back. I LOVE Christmas. So what can I do to bring the joy back? Well, first thing, this year we are not making crazy lavish gifts. Why do we do that anyway!? It makes no sense to me anymore. I want to celebrate Christmas for what it is, a joyful spiritual holiday.
ReplyDeleteAnd as a side note, I will be getting the kids in my life some gifts, but I'm going to this craft/artisan show on Sunday. Local people, local families trying to make a living out of doing what the love. I will be supporting that by buying smaller, more useful and made-with-love gifts to give the kiddos.
Stephanie, I so agree with you! I stopped celebrating Christmas several years ago, as far as decorating or purchased gifts. My girls and I get together every year and make huge trays of cookies, candies and sweet breads, and the girls gift those to their neighbors, friends and coworkers. I buy the ingredients, that is my gift to my girls. Their gift to me is the day we spend together! (They always give me something else, too, over my objections). This year, I am also taking Christmas back! I am going to decorate, simply, and really enjoy the season. Still not buying gifts, but I am going to play Christmas music, host the family meal at my home instead of my daughter doing it, and make it a lovely, special day. I have come to realize that by refusing to celebrate the day, it is not changing anybody else's way of doing it, it is only depriving me of the joy. Thus, this post, to remind people of the deeper meaning of the holiday. You have an excellent idea of buying made-with-love gifts. I think perhaps I will do that, instead of not buying anything!!! Thank you so much for coming by! Hugs
ReplyDeleteSandra, thanks so much for stopping by to leave a sweet comment today on my Muddy Buddies. I love the reminder of your post. I love this time of year for the beauty of it in the decorations~simple or elaborate, the delicious foods, the precious family time and celebrating the birth of Christ. Each year, however, I am saddened by the blatant materialism aimed at diverting our attention from the true meaning of Christmas. I am your newest follower. I hope you'll visit Posed Perfection again soon. Enjoy the beauty of this glorious season!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Nici

DeleteThis is SUCH a beautifully written post, Sandra. Your words ring so true and are such a good reminder to us of how very lucky we are. Just what I needed to read again this morning. Thank you! xo Claire
ReplyDeleteThank you, Claire, I so appreciate you stopping by. Hugs and blessings!
ReplyDeleteSandra, very well put! You are such a thoughtful one! We always donate to the food pantry as well as a deer to the Food Harvest. I think that in general, the blog world is a kind and generous lot and judging from the comments on this one, it seems to be true!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Dani, for your sweet words and also for your generosity. I couldn't agree more, bloggers are the kindest, warmest, most generous people ever. I am amazed by how simply everybody is so wonderful!!
ReplyDeleteWell said Sandra. Sometimes it is easy to be tempted to keep up with the Jones. With my health problems and now health concerns for my youngest, I have come to realize that the greatest gift we have is each other.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, Taunnie, all we truly need is each other, if we love enough, everything else falls into place. Sometimes not perfectly, not as we wish it to be, but with love, everything else becomes easier. I am sorry about your health problems, and those of your offspring. That is the one issue that is hardest to overcome, illness makes everything such a struggle. I wish both of you improved health, and quickly! Thank you for coming by.
